Who can be a member of the School's Council?
We have an active School's Council with children representing their fellow pupils from Year 1 to Year 6. Each councillor is elected by their classmates at the beginning of the school year after a short presentation explaining why they should be elected. The members then elect a Chair, an Assistant Chair, treasurer and a Secretary.
What do we do?
Members of the Council take part in discussions and votes and also feedback any relevant information to their class. We try to meet once a month or more if something is being organised e.g. a cake sale, Christmas and Easter magazine. At times they are requested to ask their class for ideas or take class votes relating to discussions by the Council. Members meet regularly with Miss Hendley. There is a suggestion box placed in the school hall which is checked before each meeting.
What have we done so far?
The School's Council have created a new mission statement for the year and discussed many great ideas! We have raised money for Children in Need and Christmas Jumper Day (Save the Children). We are currently planning to have a cake sale every half term with each class taking it in turns to provide cakes. The money raised will go towards developing the school further.
Why the children like school council?
"We like raising money and going to the meetings," (Year 4)
"I enjoy making the Easter Magazine and listening to ideas from pupils," (Year 5)
"Each time you raise money, you've brought something to help someone," (Year 2)
"I like the meetings at Garth Park. It is fun and I have made new friends. The lady who runs it is very nice and listens to everyone's ideas," (Year 6)
Our School Council Mission Statement:
